Like most of you, my husband always looks forward for the weekends. And particularly for the one when he could relax at home with no “to-do list” like shopping and other errands. One such Saturday we got up with a cheerful mind and somehow our hearts got driven to despair as we discussed on some of the difficult situations that we were facing. I thought in my mind that the Saturday would go uninteresting and somber. A voice kept lingering in me saying that “Its your choice to make this day happy or dull, make the choice to be happy.”. But it was quite difficult to get over the disturbing thoughts.
Then we got to hear a sermon which totally changed our state of mind. It said about casting all our burdens upon the Lord. We cast our cares upon Him but do we quit worrying? Why don’t we just give it to Him and rest in His promises. Its easy to worry and justify yourself that you have valid reason to worry about. But why don’t you choose to rest and watch what God is doing when you have given your troubles into His hand.
Does the earthly father like to see his children worried after he has said to his children that he would take care of whatever asked for. He would be upset over the fact that they don’t trust him enough that they worry. The same way Our Heavenly Father who has given us the privilege to call Him, “Abba, Father” would certainly be unhappy to see us panic on something that He said that He would take care. If our earthly father could raise us and provide for our needs according to the provision that he has , then how much more would Our Heavenly Daddy, the ruler over the whole riches of above and below, provide His children. As said in the verse Matthew 7:11, “So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.”. We just have to relax and pray to be inclined to the will of God.
We were so overwhelmed with joy after the sermon. It was like our hearts were rejoicing thinking of our loving God who keeps His promises and have us resting in His bosom. When we read about Hannah in the 1st chapter of 1 Samuel its said that she was discouraged and bitter as she was unable to bear a child and was ridiculed by husband’s second wife who had children. It is said in the chapter that she wept, was distressed and wouldn’t eat. As we read on we see that Eli misunderstood her to be drunk as she prayed in pain, speaking in her heart and words didn’t utter from her mouth. We get to read as follows in 1 Samuel 1:14 – 18, And Eli said to her, “How long will you go on being drunk? Put your wine away from you.”. But Hannah answered, “No, my lord, I am a woman troubled in spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the Lord. Do not regard your servant as a worthless woman, for all along I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation.”. Then Eli answered, “Go in peace, and the God of Israel grant your petition that you have made to him.”. And she said, “Let your servant find favor in your eyes.”. Then the woman went her way and ate, and her face was no longer sad.”.
Meditating on the last line strengthened me a lot. Earlier Hannah had been disappointed to the point of being physically sick and unable to eat. But at this point she returned home well and happy. She must have had a change of attitude due to the following factors.
She had honestly poured out her heart to the Lord. She prayed earnestly. Then the encouragement she received from Eli as she shared her pain with him would have uplifted her spirit and comforted her. Most importantly she resolved to leave the problem with God. Just like Hannah, tell God how you really feel and leave your problems with Him. Trust that He will take care. Stress and worry would never solve the problem. As asked in Matthew 6:27, “And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?”.
I would like to encourage you to trust God and to rest in His promises. If has He promised, He is faithful to fulfil it too. I may not know the depth of your problem. I may not be able to comprehend how serious it is. But I can tell you of someone who could solve it out all for you. He will take all your worries on His shoulder and lead you out victoriously. His name is Jesus. He died for you and me. His love has no limits. Its unconditional. You can never make Him love you more or less. He is always the same. Unchanging God. Ask Him for help. Invite Him to be your Savior, Lord and Friend. Ask Him to change your life and make it new. I promise you that your life will never be the same again. You will be rejoicing even when situations may seem miserable because you have set your hope on Jesus. He will never leave you nor forsake you.
